Families and teachers often ask how GQC compares with well-known programmes. This page describes those programmes as they publicly present themselves. GQC is not affiliated with any of them, is not an ISEF qualifying fair, and does not claim their partners as ours. We publish the map so you can choose on purpose.
Ages 14–22. Three live cities. Venture-building plus a learning experience.
GQC is a year-long student innovation award for teams aged 14–22. It runs live chapters in Hong Kong, London and New York, with a combined Global Final. The work is venture-building in the broad sense — a problem, evidence, a prototype or campaign, a defence — wrapped in an eleven-week Learning Experience that every shortlisted open-round team completes. It is not a science-fair qualifier. It does not feed Regeneron ISEF, does not replace a FIRST season, and does not pretend to be a research olympiad.
If you want a path to ISEF, use your regional ISEF-affiliated fair. If you want a multi-month robotics season, look at FIRST. If you want creative problem-solving with a long school-year cadence, Odyssey of the Mind and Future Problem Solving are built for that. If you want an entrepreneurship challenge that culminates at Space Center Houston, read Conrad below. If you want mentored venture-building with written critique in three world cities, that is the job GQC is designed to do.
The world’s largest pre-college STEM fair.
The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is organised by the Society for Science. The 2026 fair is scheduled for 9–15 May 2026 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Public materials for the cycle describe more than 1,700 finalists, roughly 365 affiliate fairs, participation from 60+ countries and regions, and more than $7 million in awards and scholarships.
Entry to ISEF is through an affiliated regional or national fair, not by open application to Phoenix. Projects are individual or team scientific research, judged in disciplinary categories, with strict rules on human participants, vertebrates and hazardous materials. It is the right programme if the student is doing original pre-college research and wants the ISEF pathway.
GQC does not operate an affiliate fair, does not send teams to Phoenix, and does not treat an ISEF placement as a GQC entry requirement or a GQC outcome. Students may do both in the same calendar year if they manage the calendars; that is their decision, not a partnership.
Innovation for ages 13–18, mostly online until Houston.
The Conrad Challenge, run by the Conrad Foundation, is a sustainability and innovation competition for students aged 13–18. Teams of 2–5 students plus an adult coach work through a staged process (typically including a first-round proposal, a development round, and — for finalists — an Innovation Summit). For the 2025–26 cycle, registration opened on 28 August 2025. The Innovation Summit is planned for April 2026 at Space Center Houston. Until the summit, the work is mostly online.
Conrad is a strong fit for younger secondary teams who want a structured, coach-supported innovation brief with a space-and-sustainability flavour and a single in-person climax. GQC’s age band starts a year later (14) and extends through undergraduate (22); our live chapters are city showcases rather than a single Houston summit; and our adult supporters write references and mentor, but do not sit on the team as coaches of record.
Diamond, Odyssey, FPS, FIRST, Genius Olympiad.
A high-school entrepreneurship competition organised with the University of Delaware’s Horn Entrepreneurship. Students pitch new ventures; there are open and live-pitch rounds, with a flagship summit. It is business-plan and venture oriented, for secondary students, and is not a research olympiad. GQC shares the venture flavour but includes undergraduates, requires an evidence pack, and stages three city chapters rather than a single university summit.
A long-running creative problem-solving programme in which school teams interpret a set of published “problems” (vehicle, technical, classics, structure, performance) under cost and materials constraints, then present at regional, association and world finals. It is a season-long extracurricular, strong on improvisation and spontaneous problems, and is not a startup competition. GQC does not use Odyssey long-term problems and is not an Odyssey association.
Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) trains students to apply a six-step problem-solving process to complex future scenes, with competitive components in Global Issues Problem Solving, Community Problem Solving, Scenario Writing and related events. It is curriculum-adjacent, often embedded in schools, and judged on process as much as product. GQC’s brief is present-tense and place-based, not a future scene booklet.
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) runs age-banded robotics programmes — FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition among them — in which teams design, build and compete with robots in a seasonal game, with a strong emphasis on Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition. Seasons are school-year long and hardware-heavy. GQC is not a robotics league; a Digital & AI team may build hardware, but they are judged on problem, evidence and ethics, not on a game score.
Genius Olympiad is an international high-school programme with project categories that typically include science, environmental quality, invention, art, creative writing, business, music and short film, hosted in recent years on a US university campus. It is a broad olympiad-style gathering rather than a venture-building school. GQC does not use olympiad categories and does not operate as a qualifying step into Genius Olympiad.
A practical way to decide.
Ask four questions. First: is the student doing laboratory or field science that needs an ISEF-affiliate pathway? If yes, ISEF’s structure is the one that matters, and GQC is optional enrichment at most. Second: does the student want a year-long team sport with robots, or a creative-problem season with a world final? FIRST, Odyssey and FPS already exist for that. Third: is the student 13 and looking for a coach-led, mostly online innovation challenge with a Houston summit? Conrad is built for that age and format. Fourth: is the student 14–22, ready to take a live brief through research and a public defence in Hong Kong, London or New York, and willing to be written to as a colleague? That is GQC.
Doing two programmes in one year is possible and sometimes wise; doing five is usually a way to produce thin work in all of them. We would rather you pick us because the Learning Experience and the three-city stage match what you need, not because a league table told you to collect logos.
